Herring are a keystone species and a pillar of food security in Nuu-chah-nulth Haahaahuułii (Chiefly territories). Rebuilding ƛusmit populations is a priority set by the Ha’wiih (Hereditary chiefs), to ensure future generations can continue harvest traditions that date back millennia.
Several Nuu-chah-nulth Nations hold vital herring survey contracts with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. This research is collaborative science in action. By working directly with the Department to gather critical biosamples and spawn data from their territories, nations ensure that stock assessments are built on accurate information.
Uu-a-thluk is proud to support Nuu-chah-nulth Nations in this important work by providing training and support for the next generation of fisheries managers and technicians who will continue the tradition.
